The Hunters Education Course is for individuals that are interested in obtaining a hunting licence to hunt in Ontario. This is a 10-hour course (when combined with Canadian Firearms Safety Course) on safe hunting procedures and wildlife identification. The written exam is provided at the conclusion of the course.

The Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Program is for young people who have successfully completed the Ontario Hunter Education Course (OHEC) and exam. NOTE: Participants must be 12 years old to write the HE Exam.

The program allows individuals to develop their hunting skills while under the direct and immediate supervision of a qualified mentor.

NEW January 2017 –  Wild Turkey Education is now included in the Hunter Education Course at no additional cost.

The Ontario Hunter Education Program will assist you to understand the natural world and become a knowledgeable and responsible hunter. The program provides introduction information about:

  • Reasons why we choose to hunt
  • Ecosystems and wildlife management
  • Field dressing large and small animals
  • Hunting laws and regulations
  • Hunter responsibilities
  • Identification, biology, management of and hunting techniques for big game, small game and waterfowl hunting and survival equipment
  • The hunter’s role in society.

The program also reinforces the firearms safety information contained in the Canadian Firearms Safety Course.

New hunters of all ages must take hunter education training and pass an exam before they can purchase their first hunting licence.

One-stop combined course:

We also offer the  “One Stop” Program, which offers students firearms safety and hunting training in preparation for examinations to obtain a Possession Acquisition Licence and hunting licence respectively.

A One-Stop Course is a minimum of 20 hours. The course covers all the material required to obtain a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) and an Outdoors Card for hunting. Examinations for each course are done on site.
